Dark Alaska night sky filled with bright green Northern Lights glowing across the horizon.

Important Booking Note:

All reservations require full payment at the time of booking. Cancellation, refund and rebooking credit terms are explained at the end of this FAQ and are also presented during checkout.

This FAQ provides a plain-language overview of the Denali Backroads Auroralander experience. It is intended to help you plan confidently and complements (but does not replace) our Rental Terms & Conditions, Cancellation & Refund Policy and Refund Schedule.

Where can I take my Denali Backroads Auroralander rig?

Auroralander rigs are designed for winter and shoulder-season travel on Alaska’s maintained transportation network.

You may travel on:

    • Plowed public roads throughout Alaska

    • Paved and unpaved (gravel) roads that are publicly accessible

    • Designated Aurora viewing corridors, pullouts and vantage points reachable via maintained roads

These routes provide excellent access to northern skies and winter scenery without leaving the road system.

Are there restrictions on where I can drive the vehicle?

Yes. Auroralander rigs may be driven on all public paved and unpaved roads, including plowed winter roads, when conditions allow.

Off-road driving is strictly prohibited.

This including travel across tundra, fields, unmaintained trails or closed or restricted routes.

Frozen Lakes – Limited Exception

Driving on frozen lakes or ice routes is permitted only when all of the following conditions are met:

    • The lake or ice route is open to public vehicular travel, and

    • The local borough, municipality or Alaska Department of Fish & Game has deemed ice thickness sufficient for vehicle traffic, and

    • There are no posted warnings, closures or advisories prohibiting vehicle access.

The renter is solely responsible for verifying current ice conditions, official advisories and posted signage before driving onto any frozen surface.

Driving on frozen lakes outside of approved conditions, during closures or without confirmation of ice safety is considered unauthorized use. Any damage, recovery or loss resulting from unsafe or unauthorized ice travel is the sole responsibility of the renter.

We strongly recommend checking:

    • Alaska 511 App

    • Local borough notices

    • Alaska Department of Fish & Game advisories

Ice conditions can change rapidly due to temperature, currents, pressure ridges and weather.

What are my pickup and return options?

    • Pickups and returns take place at our Charles Street shop in Fairbanks, Alaska

    • Airport pickups and returns are not offered

    • Pickup and return times are selected during booking

    • Pickup and return must occur during standard shop hours

Please notify us as soon as possible if you need to adjust your scheduled times.

What equipment is included and how much space is available?

Your Auroralander rig includes a winter-optimized kit, such as:

  •      Aurora viewing tent
  •      An external diesel heating system
  •      Power System
  •      Headlamps
  •      Arctic Oven Deluxe Padded Camp Chairs
  •      First aid kit

Packing tips:

    • Soft-sided duffle bags are strongly recommended

    • Hard suitcases take up valuable winter cargo space

    • Dry bags are available for transferring gear

    • Unneeded luggage can be stored securely at our shop

The 4Runner seats up to five people, but best comfort is with 2–3 travelers.

For groups of 4–5, space is limited and packing light is essential. Additional storage solutions may be available as add-ons during the reservation process.

How do I stay warm and dry?

You are responsible for bringing your own personal cold-weather clothing. We strongly recommend:

    • Insulated winter jacket and snow pants

    • Waterproof or insulated boots

    • Fleece and thermal base layers

    • Warm hat, gloves and insulated socks

Winter temperatures can range from moderate cold to extreme sub-zero conditions, depending on location and season.

Your Auroralander includes:

    • A dedicated heater system for in the tent

    • An Aurora / winter viewing tent designed to block wind and retain heat

These systems improve comfort during Aurora viewing but do not replace proper winter clothing.

Need winter gear?

If you do not own appropriate winter clothing, we are happy to recommend local, full-service winter clothing rental providers that specialize in extreme cold weather gear. Please contact us prior to your trip for recommendations.

What are my options for water and drinks?

We provide refillable water jugs and a water-heating system suitable for warming or boiling water.

Many guests also bring bottled beverages or ready-to-drink items for convenience, especially in freezing conditions.

Is there power or electricity available?

Yes. Each Auroralander vehicle includes a portable power station designed for winter use, which provides:

    • A built-in 120V AC inverter for small appliances and charging

    • USB ports for phones, cameras and electronics

    • 12V output for vehicle accessories

The power system supports heater accessories, lighting and personal device charging. Operating guidance and best-use practices are provided at pickup.

Insurance & Identity Verification

Why do I need to verify my insurance and identity?

To protect both our guests and our vehicles, Denali Backroads requires verification of active auto insurance and driver identity for all reservations. These steps help ensure that all drivers meet eligibility requirements and that your trip proceeds without delays at pickup.

What is insurance verification and how does it work?

We use MeasureOne to securely verify that you have an active personal auto insurance policy.

    • At checkout: Insurance is verified during the reservation process to confirm eligibility.

    • Before your trip: Insurance is verified again approximately three weeks prior to pickup to ensure the policy is still active and valid.

This process is automated and typically takes only a few minutes to complete.

Why is insurance verified more than once?

Insurance policies can change between booking and pickup. The second verification ensures that coverage is still in force at the time of your rental and helps prevent last-minute issues or delays when you arrive.

What is identity verification and why is it required?

We use Stripe Identity Verification to confirm the identity of the primary renter and authorized drivers. This is a standard security measure used by many rental and travel companies to prevent fraud and ensure compliance with payment and insurance requirements.

When will I complete identity verification?

Identity verification is completed approximately three weeks prior to your pickup date, at the same time as the second insurance verification.

You will receive an email with secure links to complete:

    • Insurance re-verification

    • Identity verification

Both steps are required before vehicle pickup.

How long do these verifications take?

Most guests complete both verifications in 5–10 minutes. The process is fully online and can be completed from your phone, tablet or computer.

Is my personal information secure?

Yes. Both MeasureOne and Stripe use industry-standard encryption and security practices. Denali Backroads does not store your full insurance policy details or identity documents-verification is handled securely by our partners.

What happens if I don’t complete the verifications?

All required verifications must be completed before vehicle pickup. Failure to complete insurance or identity verification may result in delays, cancellation or denial of vehicle release in accordance with our Terms & Conditions.

What if I have trouble completing the verification?

If you experience any issues or have questions during the process, please contact us as soon as possible. We’re happy to help ensure everything is completed smoothly well before your pickup date.

What gas mileage can I expect?

Fuel economy varies based on winter conditions, idling time, load, terrain and driving style. Under normal conditions, the vehicle’s fuel capacity allows for hundreds of miles of road travel.

Fuel stations are available in larger communities. Optional fuel solutions and route-planning tools may be available as add-ons during booking.

How many miles are included with my rental?

Each rental includes a daily mileage allowance of 200 miles, pooled across the rental duration.

Mileage options, overage handling, and unlimited mileage upgrades are available as add-ons during the reservation process.

Authorized Use & Operating Restrictions

Use is limited to lawful, personal, recreational travel.

Commercial use, ride-sharing, delivery, towing (unless authorized), racing or illegal activity are strictly prohibited.

Unauthorized drivers constitute a material breach and void coverage.

Travel into Canada is permitted only with prior approval from Denali Backroads and may be subject to additional requirements, documentation, or restrictions.

What are my responsibilities for vehicle care and cleaning?

You’re expected to treat the vehicle with responsible care throughout your rental.

    • Avoid hazards and prohibited driving

    • Report any problems promptly including parking or traffic violations

What is your smoking policy?

Smoking of any kind is strictly prohibited, including tobacco, cannabis, vaping or e-cigarettes.
